The author Julie Carr presented me with an intriguing creative nonfiction book nearing its publication date. Accompanied by various multimedia elements and an array of ideas and inquiries that we explored together, she wanted to have a website that worked as an extension of the published book. The development of the Mud, Blood, and Ghosts website involved multiple drafts and revisions as we determined the optimal structure for her content. The resulting site includes five distinct pages, functioning independently while remaining integrated within Julie's overarching author platform.
To achieve this cohesive design, I implemented custom CSS, utilizing collection-IDs and code injections. This approach allowed the Mud, Blood, and Ghosts pages to operate as their own unique entity, complete with individual styles, fonts, colors, navigation, and footer, all aligned with the existing branding of the published book.
Before integrating Mud, Blood, and Ghosts, it was essential to rebuild Julie’s main website and transition it from Squarespace 7.0 to 7.1. Following this upgrade, each page for Mud, Blood, and Ghosts now offers a visually captivating experience, integrating videos, audio blocks, dynamic layering, and animations that complement the text of Julie's book.
This thoughtful integration not only enhances the visual appeal but also provides an enriched understanding of the content, allowing readers to fully engage and interact with her work. Each design choice has been made with care, ensuring that the multimedia elements serve to support and deepen the reading experience, thereby creating a narrative that resonates with the audience. The Mud, Blood, and Ghosts website is crafted to complement the book, fostering a dynamic dialogue and offering visitors insights and information that extend beyond the printed material.
In Julie’s own words…
"HR's ability to organize complex materials into user-friendly and easily navigated pages is astounding. HR fully understood my vision! She worked quickly and efficiently to translate content into beautiful and intuitive visual arrangements. I wanted my book, Mud, Blood, and Ghosts, to have another life on the internet, and HR made that happen. Most book websites are simply advertisements for the book. But the website HR created is an artwork on its own merits. It's beautiful, dynamic, and easy to use. Working with HR was so easy because she got what I wanted right away and made it happen! I couldn't be happier with how it turned out."
