The author Sasha Steensen came to me with a fascinating creative nonfiction book in progress, hundreds of pieces of multimedia, and a lot of ideas and questions that we talked through.

This website took on several drafts and revisions as we worked through various ideas for how to organize her material.

The Overland website now includes 13 pages that act as their own fully intact website, all while existing within Sasha’s overall author website.

To accomplish this, I created custom CSS which was applied via collection-IDs and code injections, so that the Overland website would appear to function as its own stand-alone site with unique styles, fonts, colors, navigation bar, and footer.

But before I could expand Sasha’s author website to house Overland, her larger site first needed to be rebuilt and converted to Squarespace 7.1 from 7.0.

After the upgrade, each Overland page is now a visually engaging experience. Automated videos, audio blocks, dynamic layering, and animations seamlessly complement the text from Sasha’s book. This integration not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also facilitates a further understanding of the book, allowing the reader to deeply engage and participate in her book. Each detail and design choice reflects a thoughtful approach, ensuring that the multimedia elements support and enrich the reading experience, creating a cohesive narrative that captivates the audience.

As Overland the book evolves as a work-in-progress, the accompanying website is designed to adapt alongside it. The agile framework allows for the seamless integration of future enhancements and concepts, ensuring that both the book and the platform reflect the latest developments in the project. The website will serve as a dynamic conversation, providing visitors with updated information and insights as new chapters unfold.

In Sasha’s own words…

Overland has been in progress for over a decade, but it wasn’t until I began working with HR that I came to see all the possibilities inherent in the work I was already doing. Not only did she create a beautiful, interactive website with the extensive materials I sent, but her vision prompted me to consider new techniques and approaches that I would not have otherwise considered. HR is a true visionary, and I am certain my work will continue to benefit from our collaboration for years to come.
